While it hasn’t inspired as many rumors and casting stories
he Hunger Games, the Total Recall remake has been privy to its own share of movie news gossip lately.
Within just the last few months both Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel have been mentioned in connection with
the project, but until today, those juicy tidbits weren’t anything more than rumors. Now they’re official.
Through a shrewd bit of domestic pandering, director Len Wiseman has convinced his wife Kate Beckinsale to join Total Recall.
She’ll play Farrell’s former spouse Lori. In addition, Jessica Biel has also officially boarded.
Since she’s not the wife of anyone involved, we can assume her interest is more business than personal.
According to Collider, she’ll fight alongside Farrell and his establishment-shaking brethren as Melina.
The first time I saw Total Recall, I was almost euphoric before the opening credits even rolled. Eleven years old, addicted to action movies and dumbfounded my parents let me rent it,
I was convinced it was going to be the greatest film I had ever seen. Needless to say, it lived up to my lofty eleven year old expectations.
Civilians were gunned down, chicks flashed their third boobs and I forged a new found respect for Arnold’s impressive killing capabilities.
A decade and a half later, I was noticeably less excited when plans for the Colin Farrell-led remake were announced, but it turns out my early eye rolling may have been misguided.
The additions of Beckinsale and Beal further fortify an already stacked supporting cast that already included Ethan Hawke and Bryan Cranston
Total Recall begins filming in Toronto this week with an eye toward a domestic release next summer.
But which one of them will have a human growing out of their stomach?
Collider is confirming that Kate Beckinsale is officially signed for Total Recall as Colin Farrell’s character’s wife.
The more cynical of the world might believe that it’s simply because her husband Len Wiseman is directing that she got the part, but it might also have to do with her being incredibly attractive and outstanding in roles like this.
Plus, with the production starting next week, they’ve secured Jessica Biel to play a woman that Farrell’s character meets in the “spy world.”
As if that weren’t enough to get the blood flowing, The Hollywood Reporter is announcing Bill Nighy will be re-teaming with Wiseman and Beckinsale to play Quatto – the leader of an underground resistance.
To play catch up, this incarnation of the Phillip K. Dick story will never make it to Mars. Instead, it will focus more on Quaid (Farrell), a factory worker who believes he is spying for one of the two major world
governments. From the sound of it, Wiseman and company might be making it more along the lines of a confusing mystery thriller – so more Minority Report than, you know,
Total Recall. This cast is strong, and sticking closer to Dick might make this re-adaptation one actually worth making.
The last bit of major casting we heard for the remake of Arnold Schwarzenegger's sci-fi action flick Total Recall had Kate Beckinsale
pegged as one of the female leads set to collaborate again with her husband and Underworld director Len Wiseman.
Now Collider has confirmed that Beckinsale has officially joined the cast, and that Jessica Biel has taken the other major female role in the remake.
Beckinsale will play Lori, the wife of Farrell's protagonist character while Biel will play Melina, another character who might know him better than Lori. In addition,
Heat Vision has learned Bill Nighy (Love Actually) has also signed on.
Nighy will play Quatto, the leader of the resistance in the story that ditches the original Mars setting of the story for two nation states called Euroamerica and New Shanghai where Farrell, a factory worker, comes to believe he's a spy, but he doesn't know for which side. In the original, Nighy's character was called Kuato, and ended up being a vessel being controlled by a small mutant inside of his body. I'm not sure if this film will be as exciting without the science fiction elements from the original, but perhaps some will still be there if it takes place in a distant future. We'll have to wait and see. Thoughts?
