JUST LOSE!

Seriously! I went out to dinner with my wife and I saw the game was 6-1 going into the 9th. A classic "We didn't have it today" performance.

We sat at the bar of our local restaurant that happened to have the MLB Channel on and they ct to Fenway... and OF COURSE they had cut it to one run and Beltre was on second.

So no, I couldn't just chalk up a loss and have a nice night with my wife. I HAD to get hooked on the bottom of the 9th.

And with the tying and winning runs on, Mike Cameron looks at a perfect pitch to end the game.

Same result as a 6-1 game.
It was a nice dinner, I must say.

The other day I was mad that the Red Sox rallied in the 9th inning because it came up short. Well today I can be happy... a game I TOTALLY gave up on goes the Red Sox way with a 3 run walk off double by Big Papi who is doing a wonderful contract push.

We may not win anything this year, but we are making it miserable for the Angels and the Tigers... if we crush enough contenders hearts maybe we'll be back in this thing!

If the Tigers miss the playoffs by a game, blame Nelson Cruz

With both the Rangers and Tigers each battling for a Division Title, a game here or a game there could make the difference between playing playoff baseball or playing golf in October.

Which is what made last night's extra inning game between the Rangers and Tigers to be so fascinating.

I was listening to the game on my XM radio on the way home from work and in the 11th inning, man it seemed like the Tigers had it in the bad.

Tied 6-6 with 2 on including Johnny Damon at season, Brennan Boesch dropped a single to right field for the game winning hit... except it didn't win the game.

Right fielder Nelson Cruz held his glove up as if he was about to catch it...

Even though the ball was about to fall 15 some odd feet in front of him and land in the no man's land between center field, right field and second base.

And a smart base runner with speed like Damon could score easily from there.



But Johnny Damon did the Alley Cat, going back and forth and at one point holding up his hands in confusion not knowing where the ball actually was.

In someways it was reminiscent of the Lonnie Smith being duped by Chuck Knoblauch and Greg Gagne in the 7th game of the 1991 World Series.

Cruz out foxed the Tigers and a double play later the Rangers were still alive...

And Texas would win the game on a homer by, who else?, Nelson Cruz.

I know it is only one game, but it was a game where the Tigers WON! They did get the hit to drive the run. Physically they did it.

But a little deception helped turn it into an L.

And for a lot of members of the 2010 Tigers, they don't have to look that far back to know how much one game could mean...

Just imagine if the 2009 Tigers won one more game.

Keep this game in mind if they miss by a single game again.

"I insist... you win the game. I don't want it."

Neither the Red Sox nor the Tigers deserved to win their game today. Seriously… the Red Sox were cruising to a shutout win when Buchholz ran out of gas and Papelbon once again was thrown into a “Quick, there are men on base with nobody out… DON’T SCREW UP situation.”

The Sox blew it…
And the Tigers refused to accept it.

Scuataro was TRYING to make an out. He was SACRIFICING himself and the Tigers made it simple for everyone but throwing it away and literally giving the Sox the win.

This was a Tigers loss much more than it was a Red Sox win.

Either way, 5 out of 6 against borderline contenders isn't bad.

June 19 - 5-4 win against the Dodgers. (Sox make 4 errors, blow a late lead and let Manny homer, but they win it in the bottom of the 9th on a Pedroia single.)
June 20 - 2-0 win against the Dodgers. (Dodgers blow an early bases loaded scoring opportunity and allow Buchholz to settle down for the win.)

June 24 - 13-11 win in Colorado. (The bullpen lets up 9 runs in 5 innings, but Pedroia homers 3 times including with 2 outs in the 10th to win a wild and stupid game.)
June 26 - 4-2 win in San Francisco. (An injury running the bases takes Buchholz out in the second, but the bullpen and Mike Cameron's bat and glove win the game.)
July 2 - 3-2 win against the Orioles. (Wakefield gets the win and J.D. Drew homers twice, but it is Nava's 2 out 8th inning bloop that landed between three fielders that breaks the tie.)

July 11 - 3-2 win in Toronto. (Jesse Litch took a no hitter into the 6th but back to back homers by McDonald and Big Papi win the game.)
July 17 - 3-2 win against Texas. (Youk ties the game in the 9th off of Cliff Lee and wins it in the 11th with a sacrifuce fly)
July 19 - 2-1 win at Oakland. (Beltre homers and Dice-K holds on to the win.)

April 9 - 4-3 loss in Kansas City. (Bard coughs up the lead, denying Wakefield a win.)
April 17 - 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay. (The Sox can't score with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 11th... lost it in the 12th.)

May 17 - 11-9 loss in New York. (The Sox come all the way back from a 5-0 first inning hole to take a 9-7 lead in the 9th... but Papelbon lets up a 2 run game tying shot to A-Rod and a 2 run walk off shot to Marcus Thames.)

July 7 - 6-4 loss in Tampa Bay. (Matt Garza comes out of the pen, shuts down a late rally as the Rays sweep the Sox.)
July 10 - 9-5 loss in Toronto. (The Sox give Lackey an early 5-3 lead that he couldn't hold.)
July 18 - 4-2 loss to the Rangers. (Lester loses a rare game at home that included a Rangers steal of home.)

Why am I rooting for the White Sox?

Anyone who reads this blog (and I know I do) you know that I am a Red Sox fan, but I also follow each race and inevitably I root for a team in each race.

The Giants are my second favorite team, so I always root for them.

And there are teams like the Cardinals, the Braves and the Angels that I don’t really like, so I’ll root for someone to beat them.

And of course I always root AGAINST the Yankees.

I have no reason to dislike any team in the A. L. Central, so logic dictates that I would be rooting for the team that has the most compelling narrative for their fans.

With the crushed city of Cleveland getting no relief from the Indians and the Royals clipping coupons, the race is down to the Twins, the Tigers and the White Sox.

You’d think I’d be rooting for the Twins. After all, I rooted for them big time in 1987 and 1991. The Twins winning would contiue to be a gigantic middle finger to the threat of contraction 9 years ago.

The Twins have won 5 Division Titles in the past 8 seasons and missed another Division Title in 2008 when they lost a one game playoff 1-0 to Chicago.

Plus with stars like Mauer and Morneau and the team playing outdoors, it makes the Twins the obvious choice for me to root for. (Not to mention that my current boss, Craig Kilborn, is from Minnesota and is a life long fan.)

Or maybe you'd think I'd be rooting for the Tigers...

The city could use a pick me up, the team was potentially cheatedout of a playoff spot last year. Plus they are a traditional team with great old unis... and play for a city that let's face it has seen better days.

Plus Jim Leyland is a borderline Hall of Famer as of now. Maybe another trip to October would clinch a ticket to Cooperstown.

And as I said before, I would have no problem seeing either of those teams going far in the post season.

Yet strangely when either one of those teams play the White Sox head to head... I find myself rooting for the White Sox.

And when I see the White Sox gain a game in the standings, I give a little fist pump.

Of the three contenders, I want to see the White Sox win the American League Central.

It isn't because I picked them at the beginning of the year.

I picked the Yankees to win the Division as well and you don't see me cheering them on!

And it clearly isn't because of a Post Season drought as they won it all just 5 years ago.

I guess I like how Kenny Williams and Ozzie Guillen do business. I like that come trade deadline, Kenny is not afraid to trade off young players.

Maybe it is because Kenny knows that there is no time like the present to have the White Sox contend and steal as many casual Chicago fans as possible.

Or maybe it is because he himself was a heralded prospect who never turned into a star player and he knows that sometimes a big league definite is more valuable than younger potential.

And I have not been shy in saying what an Ozzie Guillen fan I am.

I like that he is a little crazy, is the face of the team and guess what? If he wins a few more divisions and another pennant, he might be putting together a Cooperstown resume.

Wouldn't that be an amazing day in Upstate New York seeing Ozzie enshrined?
He's not there now (although he HAS matched Hall of Fame managers Earl Weaver, Leo Durocher and Whitey Herzog in World Series titles) but I want to see him pad his resume.

Maybe I am rooting for the White Sox because I have a soft spot in my heart for their fans.

As I wrote in my "Why Doesn't Anyone Love The White Sox?" post a few years ago, the South Siders get such little love that it is kind of startling.

If you meet someone from Chicago, it is almost assumed they are a Cubs fan. It's more pronounced than even the Yankees and Mets disparity in New York.

There is nothing cute and cuddly about the White Sox and if you have rooted for them over the years, you are clearly not a front runner nor doing the fashionable thing.

And I am guessing a lot of them are enjoying the possibility of making the post season AGAIN while the Cubs are imploding.

Or maybe I am rooting for the White Sox because I want SOME kind of Sox in the playoffs!

Whatever the reason is, I am hoping the playoffs go through Chicago in the American League. Baseball is emotional and logic sometimes is thrown out the window.

All I know is the White Sox were playing the A's last night... and I am hoping the A's win the West... yet when I saw it was a Sox win, I gave a little fist pump.

Let's go Sox (Red and White)

Not a fan of the white hats... but it worked on some teams

Once again baseball busted out the white hats for patriotic reasons and as I said before, the players looked like the Good Humor Man.

Teams like the Yankees should NOT have white hats. They have an amazing uniform that shouldn't be messed with.

But I confess, as bad as most teams looked with the white hats, a few teams actually pulled it off and maybe it would be a good look in the future.


I thought it worked well with the Diamondbacks.

The white hat with the Red Jersey looked kind of cool. Plus the team is trying to build a new identity, especially with Kirk Gibson in charge. Why not have a new look?

I think it would work better with their A instead of the snake D on the cap.

But it works for the snakes.



It looked surprisingly good with the Tigers as well.

I didn't think I'd like it with a traditional uniform like Detroit's (along with the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox and Giants are the best of the traditional unis).

But the white hat did invoke some nostalgia.

It looked like the hat they would have worn in the Charlie Gehringer years.

Go with it as an alternative cap, Detroit.


Speaking of traditional teams, I think it went surprisingly well with the Indians.

It harkened back to the 1920 World Champion Indians and Stan Covelski would look good wearing it.

Granted I am being a hypocrite.

I have told the Indians to pick a cap and then suggested two more versions for them... but hey it is my blog.


So keep wearing those Good Humor Man hats, D'Backs, Tigers and Tribe.

I know I trashed them before, but to quote Rodney in Caddyshack, "It looks good on YOU though."

Edwin Jackson looked good for someone nobody wanted

I am hard pressed to think of a single writer who thought that Edwin Jackson was actually coveted by the White Sox. Everyone seemed to think he was going to be dealt to Washington and somehow the White Sox were TRULY lusting after Adam Duun.

I am equally unable to find many people who thought it was a good deal.

But 7 strong innings from Jackson today sunk the Tigers below .500 in August and putting them 8 games out.

More or less the Tigers are done.

And if Edwin continues to pitch well, the White Sox might have a stacked rotation going into October.
