Sully Baseball Honors GARRET ANDERSON

Garret Anderson was designated for assignment today by the Los Angeles Dodgers and unless a team that needs a veteran bat (White Sox? Giants? Red Sox?) picks up Anderson, his wonderful career might be over.

And like my salute to Jermaine Dye, whose career unceremoniously ended this last off season, I felt the need to pay tribute to Anderson. His career wasn't Hall of Fame worthy, but he should always be loved by a fan base. Like Dye, Anderson drove in the World Series winning run.

He is a native of Los Angeles who played for the California Angels, Anaheim Angels AND the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

In his 14 years (plus a few games) in the many incarnations of the Angels, he played more games, collected more hits, doubles and RBI and hit more grand slams than anyone in franchise history.

He was part of the 1995 Angels that came so close to a Division Title...
And he was a key member of the 2002 team that won it all...
And also was part of the 2005, 2007 and 2008 Division winners.

And he came up big in many big games.
He clocked an 8th inning game tying homer off of El Duque Hernandez in Game 2 of the 2002 Dvision Series that turned the tide of the series in favor of the underdog Angels.

And, much to my dad's dismay, he crushed a 3 run double in Game 7 of the 2002 World Series that gave the Angels a 4-1 lead over the Giants... which turned out to be the final score.

In 2005, again against the favored Yankees, he homered in Game 3 of the Division Series off of Randy Johnson that turned a Yankee advantage into an Angels slugfest. In the clinching Game 5, he homered off of Mike Mussina and drove in another as the Yankees again finished off the Yankees.

The very next day, he homered in Game 1 of the ALCS, sending the '05 White Sox to their lone defeat in the post season.

He was a great Angel... one of the best and #16 should be retired.

His career is worth a solid sendoff.

Perhaps he can finish the season (and his baseball tenure) back in Anaheim... or Los Angeles... OK in California where he belongs.

I told the Mets not to sign Francisco Rodriguez

There is a tale of two closers in New York.

Both are from Latin America… both are slight… both have World Series rings… both have experienced the thrill of being the pitcher on the mound when their team wins a post season series.

One, Mariano Rivera, is stoic, clutch, doesn’t let the rare blown save get on his nerves and is one of the classiest and easy to like Hall of Fame legends in Yankee history.

The other, Francisco Rodriguez, beats the crap out of his elderly father in law.

See the difference? It is subtle.

Seriously… I said back in 2008 the winner of the Francisco Rodriguez sweepstakes was the team that DIDN’T sign him.

I’ve felt he was overrated, coasting on the reputation earned in the 2002 post season when nobody had a scouting report on him. (Yet when Bonds figured him out, he launched a homer in the 2002 World Series that I don’t think has landed yet.)

Yeah he piled up tons of regular season saves. So did Armando Benitez. As a Red Sox fan, there were fewer more welcomed sights than seeing Rodriguez coming out of the bullpen in the playoffs. (His 0-3 record with a 7.36 ERA in 3 playoff series against Boston can attest for that… as can Manny Ramirez standing and admiring his walk off homer in the 2007 Division Series.)

But, like Manny, I never anticipated “beating up the elderly” to be on his debit column.

He’s got baggage now… along with a HUGE paycheck. Good luck dealing him. And this is coming of course at a time when, even with Santana’s complete game shutout today, the Mets are floundering at .500 in August.

And while it not seem fair, but this sort of crazy distraction coupled with the season slipping away, could be the nail in Jerry Manuel’s coffin.

Now I’m not saying the Angels are world beaters since Rodriguez left.
But with all their problems, Los Angeles of Anaheim is above .500.

And they drafted Randal Grichuk and Garrett Richards in Rodriguez’s place.

And oh yeah, when Brian Feuntes faced the Red Sox in a playoff situation last year… he came through!

Write it in ink... the Angels are winning the division

I don't care that the Rangers have a 3 1/2 game lead, currently the biggest lead in the bigs.

I don't care that Kendry Morales ended his own season.

I've been saying this for the past month and a half and I stand by it.

The Rangers will wither, the A's are a few horses short and the Mariners are waving the white flag.

I am sick of the Angels in the post season too but it is going to happen whether we like it or not.

Now THAT'S a lousy debut for your new team!

Far be it for me to feel sorry for the Angels, one of my least favorite teams. But you never want to see another player get hurt.

And the Angels, who went into tonight a full week behind the Rangers, thought they matched Texas' move for Cliff Lee when they got Dan Haren for some young players and former All Star Joe Saunders. And with the Rangers historical tendency to fall apart in August, it seemed like a great move.

Then Kevin Youkilis lined a ball off his arm, he was taken out and the Angels were at the mercy of their erratic bullpen.

2 Papi homers and a decent Buchholz pitching performance later, the Sox pulled out a win even though they gave the Angels every opportunity to win.

So now the Angels are more than a week out of first... and if the Red Sox sweep them, they will be at even .500 in late July.

Sounds good to me!

I'm glad another perennial playoff team is struggling too

Nothing is a bigger boost to your own self esteem than someone else's misery.

And with the Red Sox's playoff hopes teetering, they can at least take solace that they are not that team the Sox always matches up with in the post season.

The Angels needed bullpen help and another bat.

Naturally they got a starting pitcher... and Dan Haren lasted almost 5 innings before he got hit with a line drive.

And today, once again their line up flaws and rotten bullpen were exposed by a Sox team that isn't exactly a world beater.

Another day another great start. And while the Sox didn't gain ground on the Rays, they did pick one up on the Yankees.

It's too early to get excited, but at least there is a glimmer of hope... at the expense of the Angels.

It may not be a banner year for the Sox, but at least we're not staring down .500.

The wheels are spinning... but at least the Sox aren't SINKING

I'll give this to the Red Sox... they aren't going quietly into the night. They could have just packed it in tonight when they fell behind 5-2, but they came back. They scored with the long ball, they scored with singles and they scored on wild pitches and being hit with a pitch with the bases loaded.

And they won with great defense and a stunning 1-2-3 9th from Papelbon.

What they couldn't do is gain any ground as it seems like the Yankees and the Rays have each lost their last games of the season. Yes, I know they are going to play each other, but somehow I think they'll each somehow finish with wins at the end of THOSE games as well.

But if the Red Sox are going to have a crazy comeback this September, they need to win games in August.

They aren't REALLY in striking distance, but who knows?

The steroid era is ending... so hopefully is the excessive celebration era

With pitching dominating and home run totals getting back to normal, we are seeing baseball finally getting out of the steroid era.

And thanks to Kendry Morales and Chris Coghlan we might be saying good bye to an era of stupid celebrations.

Look, I am not against having fun or even a fun spontaneous celebration. But I am glad to see home run celebrations muted a little after Kendry Morales put his career in peril due to a walk off homer leap.

And with the Angels offense sputtering, you think they could use his bat these days?

Not every game ending shot should be treated the same as Joe Carter's homer.

And I wouldn't mind seeing people celebrate things like walk off homers a smidge more sincerely.

Wouldn't it be more interesting to see the players celebrate based on what they would actually do instead of a carefully choreographed dance.

I want to see ball players thrilled at winning on the last swing of the bat, not Riverdance.

The only thing that Morales can take comfort in this year is that Chris Coghlan found a stupider injury in a post game celebration.

He wasn't even the hero of the game. He was trying to shove a cream pie in the face of Wes Helms. And somehow he busted his knee.

I don't even know how that is possible.
Did he have the pie on his knee?

But this is a recent tradition that I can do without. The pie in the face may have been funny once or twice, but like the bucket of Gatorade on the winning coach, it has become such a cliche that it is a joyless obligation rather than a fun ritual.

And Heaven forbid a guy be interviewed with a little dignity after getting the game winning hit. I would have love to see these guys pull that on Eddie Murray or Kirk Gibson after a game winning hit.

Or if you are going to do something... be original. The Keystone Cops thought pies in the face were hack.

But something just hit me... the steroid era is ending and dudes are getting hurt celebrating?

Maybe they are getting hurt because they are no longer juiced.

Feeling good about the Red Sox... for 2011

There are a lot of reasons to be happy in Red Sox Nation this morning after last night's 6-0 thrashing of the Angels of wherever the hell they claim they play.

Clay Buchholz wiggled out of trouble in the first and then asserted himself as the ace we've been waiting to see since he threw that no hitter. He will probably finish the season with 17-18 wins and a sub 3 ERA and find himself in the Cy Young discussion. In his last 5 starts he is 4-0 with a 1.20 ERA with averaging more than 7 1/3 innings a start.

Dustin Pedroia came back and while he pulled an O fer, his presence in the line up was a welcomed sight.

Victor Martinez was productive, young relievers Felix Doubrount and Michael Bowden each threw a shutout inning....
And of course young Ryan Kalish put the game away with a grand slam.

For the first time in a while, I am feeling super confident about the chances for the Red Sox... just not for this year.

Last night's win was too little too late for the 2010 season. Not only do the Red Sox need to go on a prolonged winning streak (I am talking 5 or 6 games) but either the Rays or the Yankees need to go in a tailspin.

I'm not sure if you've been watching those two teams, but I don't see either one going on a long losing streak.

Even with the Yankees inconsistent and injured pitching, they have Sabathia who is always good for starting a winning streak and they can (for the most part) slug their way past inferior teams (Bryan Bullington starts notwithstanding).

And the Rays are so chocked full of talent that they are making minced meat out of teams like the Rangers.

Also let's not forget that the White Sox are only 2 games back in the loss column for the Wild Card race.

Too many things have to go the Red Sox way over these last 42 games to make 2010 realistically a playoff year. But players are getting healthy. YOUNG players are contributing. They could have homegrown depth in the bullpen and a pair of home grown aces.

If Ellsbury can come back then centerfield and leftfield could have home grown starters.

If we can get past the notion that we need to make the playoffs every year, then we can see many silver linings on this one.

Let me put it this way... the magic number for the 2011 Eastern Division Title is 163!!!

The Red Sox rebounded from the frustrating split in Seattle with a trip to Anaheim where they ransacked their house, keyed their car and ate their food.





Three straight dodged bullets and essentially put a bullet in the head of the Angels hopes to win their 4th straight division title.





They are a .500 team, 8 1/2 games back on the verge of August. That's devastation...

And now the Sox are going to take on a floundering Tigers team who might be seeing their Division Title hopes slip away with a bad second half for the third time in four seasons.



But are the Sox back in it?

They are 6 games back in the loss column but getting healthy.



They have a good starting 5 and the lineup is hitting again.



Don't tempt me into thinking they are contenders. I need the pain now and not later!
