Hey Rangers... Nice Killer Instinct

Seriously Rangers... I was all ready for a kick ass post about you guys. You had a 6-1 lead, Javy Vazquez knocked out of the game, Cliff Lee on the mound and notice was being served that there was a new sheriff in the American League.

Then when Jeter tripled, I thought to myself "Uh oh... I've seen this before."

And when the score got to be a 1 run game in the 9th I thought "Oh boy... they are going to take the lead."

But with the lead taken, the Rangers had the tying run on third with nobody out and Young, Hamilton and Guerrero coming up.

And they couldn't tie the game.

This was a monumentally stupid loss for the Rangers. The good will of the rally against Rivera last night was flushed down the toilet and they choked this one away.

Now this can be a learning experience or this can be confirmation that they aren't in the Yankees class just yet.

But teams with titles on their mind find a way to win this... and if need be find a way to tie the score in the 9th.

You know, like the way the Yankees won it in the 9th.

FRIDAY THE 13th... a Red Sox horror show

Perhaps it was appropriate that this bloody, gruesome and terrifying game was played on Friday the 13th.

This could be the loss of the year... and folks, unlike Jason, I get the sense this Red Sox team isn't coming back to life.

On a night when the Sox got 3 straight homers and gave Josh Beckett and early 8-2 lead fourth inning lead, this should have been a night to say "Pick up the easy win, give Bard and Papelbon the night off and give the ball to Lester tomorrow to get the series win."

Instead the game unfolded in a way that made the re-opening of Camp Crystal Lake look event free.

Homers, 2 out hits, Vlad Guerrero beating out an infield hit... and finally Wakefield throwing one more pitch than I did to end the game.

And again, Beckett looked nothing short of horrible.

Folks, this season might be done.
I don't even care that BOTH the Yankees and the Rays lost tonight.

The White Sox are on the verge of passing the Sox in the Wild Card race.

I am going to update the tally... but frankly I may have to stop soon.

Unless they have a 4 or 5 game winning streak in them soon, their days of being called "A Contender" are running out.

Was tonight an ALCS preview? TBS is hoping not

The Rangers are playing the Rays at the Trop and game one of the series was a Cy Young match up of David Price versus Cliff Lee. The game itself was a thriller with the Rays coming back from behind and recapturing a portion of the AL East lead (and be tied for the best record in baseball.)

Both teams are filled with young exciting All Stars playing a brand of baseball that should be emulated across the land. And both are winning big despite financial constraints (the Rays and their microscopic payroll and the Rangers with bankruptcy and changing ownership.)

It could be a playoff preview, especially if the Rays capture the AL East crown, and a best of seven series between these teams (each in search of their first ever World Series title) would be filled with tension.

And it would the match up of TBS' nightmares.

Baseball has a hard enough time getting a national audience... with this series they will stuggle to get a LOCAL audience. The Dallas/Arlington/Fort Worth area would probably be wondering why the coverage of Cowboys practice has been preempted and 13 years and a pennant later, people in Tampa Bay still seem unaware that there is a baseball team in St. Pete.

If baseball had any promotions savvy they would be able to make these teams seem exciting and the antidote to big market teams bullying smaller markets.

Then again, people CLAIM they don't want to see the Yankees play a big market team in the World Series... then the Yankees vs the Phillies gets higher ratings than when smaller budget teams like the White Sox, Astros, Tigers, Cardinals or Rays are in the series.

Baseball will never be football in popularity, but why can't they at least make their product SEEN more? Football can turn a Super Bowl between New Orleans and Indianapolis into a national event.

You'd think that a series that features Evan Longoria, David Price, Carl Crawford, Josh Hamilton, Elvis Andrus, Cliff Lee and Vladimir Guerrero would at least catch some people's attention.

Maybe when Bud Selig steps down, someone who can MARKET a sport can take over.

(That's right, I had to find a way to blame Selig.)

It is pretty close to being over, Red Sox fans

My fellow Red Sox fans... before anyone gets too excited about Pedroia's eminent return, keep these three things in mind:

- The Red Sox are closer to 4th place than to 2nd in the AL East.

- The Red Sox need to win series, but they've been splitting or losing them.

- No matter how many injuries the Rays have, there is always a stud to come up from the farm to fill in.

It's been remarkable that the Sox have even hung in there, but it is slipping away and fast. And once again Dice-K pitched well, but one bad inning derailed him (no thanks to more shoddy relief by DelCarmen.)

Write it in ink... the Angels are winning the division

I don't care that the Rangers have a 3 1/2 game lead, currently the biggest lead in the bigs.

I don't care that Kendry Morales ended his own season.

I've been saying this for the past month and a half and I stand by it.

The Rangers will wither, the A's are a few horses short and the Mariners are waving the white flag.

I am sick of the Angels in the post season too but it is going to happen whether we like it or not.

Hey Dodgers... what is wrong with this picture?

On July 21, 2009... less than a year ago, Cliff Lee was a pitcher for the Indians.
He threw a complete game 2-1 victory for the lowly Indians and as the defending Cy Young winner was on the trade block.

And the Dodgers, who made it to the 2008 NLCS, desperately needed an ace pitcher. They had some decent pitching but were also leaning on the Clayton Kershaws and Chad Billingsleys too much. They needed a stud to put them over the top.

He was traded to the Phillies 10 days later... and threw 8 shutout innings in the NLCS against the Dodgers.

He's been traded three times in the past year.

The Dodgers still desperately need a #1 starter.
Cliff Lee would have been PERFECT ace for the Dodgers. They may have won the 2009 NL Pennant and probably would be in first place as I type this instead of being in 4th place, 6 games back of the Padres in the loss column.

And yet with the need for Lee, the minor leaguers to trade, the pitchers park for him to thrive and the big market to resign him.

And how many proposed trades did we hear involving the Dodgers?
That would be ZERO!!!

It is starting to feel like it is getting out of reach

Yeah, I know the Red Sox are only 4 games back of the Rays in the loss column.

Yeah I know there is nearly half a season to play.

Yeah I know that Beckett and Buchholz are coming back soon...

But the way the Sox played against Texas just doesn't give me any hope. They need to win games against contenders, especially at home.

They need to take advantage of Rays losses.

They need to win games Jon Lester starts at home.

And they need to get some momentum after a great win like yesterday's.

Instead they are barely treading water.

Either way, it is time to update the tally.

The Rangers won the series against the Angels and still have a 7 game lead in the AL West.

Call me crazy, but I am standing by "Wake me when it is Labor Day and the Rangers are in first place" stance when it comes to Texas.

The heat is going to be murder and the Angels essentially swapped out Joe Saunders and his mediocre numbers for Dan Haren and his potential All Star numbers.

Don't count out the Angels yet.

They'll make the Rangers sweat... as if they won't be sweating enough as it is.

I am still not buying the Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers have won 11 of their last 12 games and currently have a 3 1/2 game lead in the AL West, which is the biggest lead of any of the Division Leaders.

They just finished an 8-1 roadtrip and everything is firing on all cylinders.

Only the Yankees, Rays, Red Sox and Braves have more wins.

This is looking like October could be played Deep In The Heart of Texas!

You will forgive me if I am not preparing a parade for the Rangers just now. Don't think less of me for throwing cold water on Ranger fan's enthusiasm.

Why?

Well first of all, isn't this the story of the Texas Rangers? Fast starts, contention into the late Spring and Early Summer only to fade away?

Did you forget that in 2009 they had a 5 1/2 game lead in mid May and were still in first place on July 10th? They went 39-38 the rest of the way and lost the Division to the Angels.

How about in 2008? They were 6 games over .500 on August 5th, then went 19-29 the rest of the way.

In 2006 the Rangers had a 5 game lead in May and were in first place in Mid July. They went 33-38 the rest of the way and finished with a sub .500 record.

In 2005 they were in first place on June 7th and went 47-59 the rest of the way.

In 2004 they were 4 1/2 in front in July and on first place in early August, but after an 8 game winning streak in August brought them to within 1/2 a game of Oakland, they finished the season 20-21.

In 2000 the Rangers were in first place on June 5th only to go 41-65 the rest of the way.

I could keep going...

Besides the teams of the last decade, the Rangers have had a history of teams that have wilted away after the All Star Break.

The 1977, 1978, 1979, 1983, 1986, 1991 and 1995 Rangers all had leads in July or later but none of them won their Division.

The 1992 and 1997 Rangers both had leads in June but would end up as an Also Ran.

Why is this so consistent in Texas?

No matter if they have Richie Zisk or Jim Sundberg or Ruben Sierra and Oddibe McDowell or Mark Teixeira and Michael Young... no matter if they played in Arlington Stadium or the Ballpark in Arlington... they wither in the Texas heat. Specifically the pitching staff tends to fall apart.

And yet the Astros have been able to put together great pitching staffs in the desert as have the Diamondbacks... which gets to the root of the problem.

Or more appropriately the ROOF of the problem.

When the Rangers spent $191 million to build a new ballpark, they got a beauty from HKS Inc, David M. Schwarz Architectural Services. But they forgot to put a roof on it.

And every year, with the exception of the three division title seasons where they took advantage of a weak AL West (although the 1999 team was a good squad) the Rangers stayed home in October despite having, as I showed in the Home Grown vs. Acquired Series, a TON of MVP and Hall of Fame caliber talent come through their franchise.

And they are the only franchise to have never won a post season series. Hell, they've won only one post season GAME!

And I can't help think that if they were playing under a roof, then the balls wouldn't be flying out as much on a summer night's game. Pitchers wouldn't be gasping for air as they walk out of the bullpen. And maybe the Rangers would have a few more memorable moments than the Nolan Ryan no hitters and the ball bouncing off of Canseco's head.

The ballpark cost under $200 million and the A-Rod contract cost $250 million. The Rangers would have been better off spending that money on a roof!

So sorry Rangers... being in first place at the summer Soltstice doesn't impress me. You want me to take notice? Be in first place at Labor Day.

Until then, I am just waiting for the collapse.

Hey Texas! You want to win dressed like THAT?

I wrote back on June 21st that I am not buying the Texas Rangers.

I've seen too many Rangers teams over the years look damn good until Arlington Texas turns into a kiln and suddenly the pitching staff turns into Shrinky Dinks.

And they finished the first half of the season on a 4 game slide including a sweep by the lowly Orioles.

However, they are making short work of my Red Sox since the All Star break.

They are up by 6 games in the loss column over the Angels.
They picked up Cliff Lee who should give the team a boost (not to mention the bullpen a rest).

They COULD win this Division.

And let's say Cliff Lee wins a pair of games in the Division Series and Colby Lewis or someone steals another game. (As of now the Rangers would play the Rays in the Division Series and have home field advantage.)

And what if they make it to the ALCS for the first time and their powerhouse line up propels them past the Yankees and into the World Series.

And then let's say the 2010 Texas Rangers does the unthinkable and takes out their National League counterparts.

Let's say they do it... and win the World Series.

Do they REALLY want to be crowned champions in these dull uniforms?

Look at them!

Just "TEXAS" on each uni? Really? OK, fine if you want to wear the road grays or dark blue top with Texas, that's fine.

But the HOME jersey with just a boring "TEXAS" across the chest? No "RANGERS"?

That's the most dull uniform decision since the Oakland A's just printing "OAKLAND" in block letters across their jerseys in the mid 1980s.

Now the Rangers have had a checkered past in their uniforms. They have a few entries in my "Most Forgettable Uniforms of the past 30 Years" entry.

And their two main uniform designs before this one are not my favorite.

This uniform with the wild west "Home on the Range" font never did anything for me...

Even someone as bad ass as Al Oliver couldn't make this uniform look good.

Plus, name one memorable moment that happened in these unis that call for nostalgia.

Can't do it, can you?

Nolan Ryan looked awesome in the 80s and 90s throwing no hitters in his Rangers uniform...

Unfortunately he also looked like a Dodger! Those threads are just a little too much like the L.A. home unis for my taste.

So I am clearly not advocating going back to THOSE styles.




This alternate uniform worn by Mark Teixeira in 2006 is cool.

The "T" to the side reminds me of the old English D for the Tigers but it isn't the same font or color scheme.

Plus I am a sucker for the sleeveless jerseys.



But the best home uniforms they ever had were from their only Division Title years, 1996, 1998 and 1999.

The red hats. The red piping. The cool wild west font.

Sure it feels a little like the Red Sox uniforms, but the all red motif sets it apart.

Plus they WON in those uniforms. They had 3 MVPs. And they fit the incredibly juiced up bodies of those Rangers clubs.

Bring those back for the second half of the season. Tell Selig it will help sell more jerseys. There's no way he could say no to THAT!

So come, Rangers. If you want to BE a champion, it helps to LOOK like one.

If the Tigers miss the playoffs by a game, blame Nelson Cruz

With both the Rangers and Tigers each battling for a Division Title, a game here or a game there could make the difference between playing playoff baseball or playing golf in October.

Which is what made last night's extra inning game between the Rangers and Tigers to be so fascinating.

I was listening to the game on my XM radio on the way home from work and in the 11th inning, man it seemed like the Tigers had it in the bad.

Tied 6-6 with 2 on including Johnny Damon at season, Brennan Boesch dropped a single to right field for the game winning hit... except it didn't win the game.

Right fielder Nelson Cruz held his glove up as if he was about to catch it...

Even though the ball was about to fall 15 some odd feet in front of him and land in the no man's land between center field, right field and second base.

And a smart base runner with speed like Damon could score easily from there.



But Johnny Damon did the Alley Cat, going back and forth and at one point holding up his hands in confusion not knowing where the ball actually was.

In someways it was reminiscent of the Lonnie Smith being duped by Chuck Knoblauch and Greg Gagne in the 7th game of the 1991 World Series.

Cruz out foxed the Tigers and a double play later the Rangers were still alive...

And Texas would win the game on a homer by, who else?, Nelson Cruz.

I know it is only one game, but it was a game where the Tigers WON! They did get the hit to drive the run. Physically they did it.

But a little deception helped turn it into an L.

And for a lot of members of the 2010 Tigers, they don't have to look that far back to know how much one game could mean...

Just imagine if the 2009 Tigers won one more game.

Keep this game in mind if they miss by a single game again.

Where there is Smoak there is fire

It looks like the Rangers pulled the trade off.

I've checked a few different sites and they are all saying the Rangers top young hitter, Justin Smoak, will be heading to Seattle and difference making ace Cliff Lee is going to the sauna known as Arlington.

And it looks like the Mariners don't give a damn about my advice.

It will be odd to see Cliff Lee wear a Rangers uniform for the first time in the All Star Game... but this is a strange time of year.

So now we see if Texas is for real.

I wasn't buying them last month... and I still won't believe this team until they are STILL in first place after Labor Day.

But color me impressed.

The Rangers are going for it.

Astros and Roy Oswalt... you are on the clock.

Hey Mariners... how about waiting until Thursday to make a deal?

It appears that Cliff Lee might not be heading to the Yankees after all.
It is a shame because so many columnists and bloggers had their stories already written talking about how this means we NEED a salary cap and it isn't fair and blah blah blah.

I admit, I threw up in my mouth a little when I heard the Yankees were on the verge of getting him, but that had nothing to do with payroll. That had to do with me being unhappy when ANYTHING positive happens with the Yankees.

Is Cliff Lee heading to Minnesota for Wilson Ramos?

Is Cliff Lee heading to Texas for Justin Smoak?

Will Cliff Lee join LeBron, Wade and Bosh with the Heat?

First of all, hold off on the deal until after the All Star Game.

Why?

Well first of all it means that Cliff Lee gets to face the Yankees (and hopefully beat them) tonight.

Secondly, Lee is going to the All Star Game. If he gets traded now, he will be making his first appearance in a Twins/Rangers/Yankees/Mets/Bridgeport Blue Fish uniform at the All Star Game.

That's just strange. Have his regular season farewell to the Mariners be a win against the Yankees and the last time the baseball fans see him as a Mariner in Anaheim this week.

Yeah the season hasn't gone as GM Jack Zduriencik planned... but at least he'll be able to say "I acquired an All Star."
