THE RED SOX WIN! Now what?

OK, I watched part of the game today... enough to see the Sox wiggle out of a bases loaded nobody out situation in the 7th inning.

It was an impressive win by Lester and for the time being, it has brought the Red Sox to within 4 games of the Wild Card.

(As of this post, Tampa is beating Detroit. If the Tigers can come back, the Sox will be 3 1/2 out... 4 1/2 out if the Rays hold on.)

So now what? The Sox have at least picked up a game over the past few days... there's a little more than a month and a half of baseball left.

Are the Sox contenders?
Are the Rays just in a bad stretch?
And is anyone paying attention to the Twins, who are just 1/2 a game behind the Sox?

It's confusing times. It's hard to get TOO excited about a split in the Bronx when the Red Sox really need to start winning series... but with the Rays slumping AND some of their pitchers experiencing arm troubles... and there are six games head to head between the Sox and Rays left...

Should I be getting excited?
Am I being teased?

I'm not sure, but what I DO know is I need to update the tally.

Seriously... the Red Sox had no business winning today.

Lester was sick. Arlington was a kiln. (Thanks open air stadium in Texas!)

Neither Bard nor Papelbon were available.

They were coming off of a bone crushing, soul sucking, "Oh my Christ did it really happen?" loss the night before.

And the Sox bats were dead and the Rangers tried to get a few rallies going and had a Hamilton homer in the 9th. And oh yeah, Scott Atchison and Felix Doubront were the Sox pitchers in the 9th... and the Rangers had the tying run at the plate with 1 out.

Then a botched hit and run play had Vlad Guerrero out by 89 feet even though the infield was basically conceding second base.

The ending was more baffling than Inception... but much more satisfying as the Sox won.

I'm still not buying their playoff hopes... but hey, they've played 2 games in Texas. 1 game they had no business losing, the other they had no business winning... and they went 1-1.

The Red Sox had a perfect game that I already took responsibility for.

And now we have a masterful 13 strikeout game by Lester and the Red Sox get exactly gotch.

Yes, it is great to see the Red Sox pitching staff looking good, deep and potentially healthy.

Yes, having a healthy Lester, Buchholz, Beckett, Lackey and Dice-K will mean the Red Sox will have one of the best starting 5 in all of baseball.

But is it too little too late?

Could be.

June 26 - 4-2 win in San Francisco. (An injury running the bases takes Buchholz out in the second, but the bullpen and Mike Cameron's bat and glove win the game.)
July 2 - 3-2 win against the Orioles. (Wakefield gets the win and J.D. Drew homers twice, but it is Nava's 2 out 8th inning bloop that landed between three fielders that breaks the tie.)

The Sox can still win the series tomorrow... but there is no sense of urgency with this team.
It will be August before you know it and that deficit isn't getting any smaller.

It's my fault that Lester lost his perfect game.

I was going to write a quick blog post to say "HEY! SOX FANS! JON LESTER IS THROWING A PERFECT GAME!"

I had no thoughts about me spoiling it because... well... I don't believe that I affect the game being played in Seattle while sitting in my kitchen in South Pasadena, California.

Just as I was typing, center fielder Eric Patterson dropped a fly ball to spoil the perfect game.

Then Michael Saunders hit a 2 run homer to spoil the no hitter, the shutout AND the lead.

Maybe I do have some effect.

I apologize to Jon and his family.

Can that count as TWO teeth grinders?

I may not have any teeth left.

I was at work today and I saw the Sox were up 4 before the Indians even came to bat... and up 5-0 after 2 with Jon Lester on the mound.

I relaxed. It was just what this Red Sox fan ordered. A simple win. I had to drive home from the Fox lot to Pasadena which is a b*tch of a drive and the Celtics and Lakers were on. I didn't want to have to worry about the Sox.

Then it was 5-3... then 6-5. By the time I was stuck in traffic the Sox were behind and unable to get a hit.

Teeth grinding. You kidding me? The Sox win the first two games, have Buchholz and Lester ready to go and you can't hold a 5-0 lead?

I had called Jon Lester a Cy Young front runner. By the time I was on the 110, I would have more faith if Willie Tyler and Lester were pitching.

So now I am disgusted... With the Celtics at half time and me in traffic, I hear the Sox feebly being shutdown by Kerry Wood in the 9th. With 2 strikes and 2 outs J. D. Drew gets plunked. Then Adrian Beltre homers.

Sox lead! I hear the Red Sox get 2 outs in the 9th as I pull into my garage in South Pasadena. HUZZAH! The Sox did it! They pulled off the come from behind win.

I spend the rest of the night with a spring in my step knowing the Sox won. And then wifey and I went our favorite sushi joint and I watched the last quarter of the Celtics game.

When THAT game was over, I just happened to check the baseball scores on my phone.

8-7 Indians. Bard gets the loss.

I almost threw up my sushi.

I don't even know how they lost and I don't want to know. I saw a bunch of rowdy Laker fans get quiet and angry and nothing will take away from my joy about that.

Price wins... it's your move Lester

I've written a lot about the NL Cy Young race this year... but not too much about the American League

It hasn't been as sexy a race with the Jimenez's, Halladays, Wainwrights, Lincecums et al dominating.

Right now I'd say two of the front runners for the AL are David Price, who pitched Tampa to an easy win over Toronto last night and leads the AL in wins and ERA, and Jon Lester, the AL Pitcher of the Month in May (based on his 5-0 record in May with a 1.84 ERA) and has the lowest batting average against in the bigs. And since starting the season 0-2 with a 8.44 ERA over his first three starts he is 7-0 with 1.28 ERA.

He goes tonight.

Yeah I know Phil Hughes, Jeff Niemann, Andy Pettitte and Clay Buchholz are all candidates as well but Lester and Price can separate themselves from the pack.

Let's hope Lester gets no hitter #2.

It's VERY close to being over

No need to update the tally today, it was a blow out. And most disturbing about it was that it assures the Indians at least a split. To make up space in the standings, the Red Sox need to win series against teams like Seattle and Cleveland... not split with them.

The Red Sox are on pace to win 91 games... and it won't be nearly enough.

It's really winding down, Sox fans. What was the mantra we were hearing?
When players start getting healthy again, we'll be in good shape.

And lo and behold, Drew, Buccholz, Beckett and Martinez are back.

And Youkilis and now possibly Lester are down.

The Red Sox health issues are reminding me of an old joke:
